catching up with jennifer cheon garcia

How did growing up in a small-town help shape who you are today?

I think it had so much to do with the way I turned out. I live in the city for the most part now. I don’t really realize how much of a country girl I am until I get back to the farm, it just feels right. Taught me to be resourceful.

How did you get your start into this industry?

I started my performing background in dance, but I think it was modeling that helped me make the transition into film.

I love that you’ve recently been speaking out on bullying. Why do you think it’s so prevalent in society today?

I think overall humans have to show more support for one another. In this digital world that we live in, it’s so easy to throw out a nasty comment and never feel or get the repercussion on our words or actions, so let’s just be nice to one another!

You star as Ivory in the hit Syfy series “Van Helsing”. (Congratulations on the show returning for its fourth season!) How has your experience been as a recurring character?

Thank you! It’s been such an unreal experience and so happy and excited to be apart of VH! I have learned so much in my journey as Ivory, particularly this season because you get to see her evolve more. She has to deal with a change in her world. Last season she was really stepping into her place as the leader. Now in season 4, we see other woman come into her lane, like Mother and Dracula- other powerful females- so it was a lot of fun to find her place in all of that.

What’s next for you?

Oh man I don’t know. I have a few projects lined up work wise, but personally what is next for me is getting my Black Belt in Taekwondo. My goal is to have it by May 2020.
